Retail mega-giant and perceived enemy of small businesses across the country (which yes, I happen to somewhat agree with) Wal-Mart has just announced it’s most recent plans for world retail domination – um, I mean a great deal for consumers.
The retail giant which has notoriously built its business model around getting its suppliers to offer ridiculously low prices in exchange for the priveledge of offering their products in volume at Wal-Mart, has publicized that they will piloting a new prescription drug program which offers drugs at $4.00 for a one month supply.
The pilot for this unprecedented program is set to take place in Tampa, Florida, and will offer the 291 prescription generic drugs at the $4 price on common prescription drugs ranging from allergy and cardiac medications to thyroid condition medications, possibly antidepressants, and blood pressure medicine.
Wal-Mart critics are not impressed though. The union funded group called Wake Up Wal-Mart has long criticized Wal-Mart’s greedy ways with its employees, both because they underpay them and because their health coverage options are much less than generous, especially for such an uber corporation and cash cow.
The group says that Wal-Mart surely may be offering consumers a nice opportunity by offering dirt cheap generic prescriptions, but it’s only doing so to deflect criticism of its employee benefits system. Many of its part time workers are forced to apply for federally funded health care, driving all of our taxes up, because either they can’t afford the deductibles in the Wal-Mart programs, or they or their family members are simply not offered coverage.
This newest prescription drug program will begin at 65 Tampa Bay area Wal-Mart stores, and if all goes well the company plans to expand into as many states as it can next year.
