We’ve always heard that common tale that carrots are good for the eyes. And why? Well, because they have a lot of beta carotene, right? Or maybe was it the vitamin C they contain? Or the fact that they contain some other nutrient? Well, apparently the common thread between foods that are good for the health of the eyes is a certain compound they share in common, which is called lutein. You may have seen this little compound featured on supplements that are advertised as being good for eye health.
I know my mom has been concerned about macular deterioration, which is the most common reason behind age related sight loss, and affects a staggering amount of the aging population. However, we can help prevent this phenomena by getting lots of natural antioxidants in our diet, and also supplementing with things like omega 3 dietary supplements which help most connective tissues, and may also help with the continued health and prosperity of those all important peepers.
They say that the best veggies to eat for sight are the ones that are yellow and green in color, and that the orange ones are good ( like carrots), but the yellow and green ones are actually better since they contain more lutein and another important compound ( which I won’t even get into here ), and which also tend to be loaded with more antioxidants as well as other important nutrients that can have an added preventive affect on the eyes like iron and other vitamins and minerals.
Our sight is one of the most important aspects of our senses that we want to keep alive and well for as long as we possibly can. With the advent of modern nutrition and supplementation science, we can definitely help naturally fend off many of the signs of aging, including worsening eyesight. Because it’s only partially hereditary!
