Artificial fragrances can contain as many as hundreds of chemical compounds to make the smell they exude into your home possible.  There are an estimate of thousands of various chemical components that are currently used here in the US today that are allowed to be used in the making of fragrances for the home, body, car, and everywhere else that we like to make smell good.

Just about everything we use today is scented in some way. Cleaners, candles, air fresheners and odor neutralizers, cat litter, laundry detergent, fabric softener. Basically you name it – it probably comes with some sort of fragrance. And that fragrance likely come with a chemical makeup that can irritate the lining of the lungs and nose and induce allergies or asthma in those that have any sensitivity.

It may even make those who didn’t have previous allergies suddenly get them if they are constantly exposed to these types of products on a daily basis – which many of us are.  But how can you avoid it these days? Many products are scented, and most of us like to somehow make our homes smell nice – especially around the holidays.

Well, there are of course natural essential oils that can scent the home. But even those may cause allergic response in some people. They aren’t made with all the superchemicals that many artificial fragrances are made with today, but they can still produce some sort of allergic reaction in those that are hyper sensitive.

Putting a lot of live plants in your house can help with the quality and freshness of the air by helping to oxygenate it. Of course, live flowers can do that same, but those usually tend to be seasonal in most areas.  Some people may even be allergic to those, but at least they’re natural and you’re not inhaling chemically produced scents.

You could alos rely on your cooking and baking to naturally scent your home with those familiar, homey smelling scents.
