Stanford University recently came out with a study that has a lot of organic growers and consumers pretty angry. And I can see why. The whole study looked at whether organic produce, milk products and other organic products had any more nutritional value such as vitamins and other nutrients than traditionally grown foods.

Of course the study showed that there was no significant nutritional difference between the two, which makes it seem like (in the headlines allover publishing the study) organic produce and other foods are just a total waste of consumers money since they can cost up to twice as much in some cases.

We all know that this is total hogwash. The whole idea and point behind organically grown foods is that you are avoiding the contaminants such as antibiotics, hormones, pesticides and chemicals that are so often used in growing produce and other organic foods.

I don’t think that organic foods ever really professed to be more nutritionally beneficial.  We all know that you can’t really get more vitamins out of organic produce (aside from the fact that we may buy it fresher because it is not irradiated – that may actually increase its nutritional value).

The whole point of buying organic is that you are not putting all the extra toxins in your body that you put in when you are eating normally grown foods that are allowed to use contaminated soils and chemicals in their growth.

Not only does the study seem ridiculous because it totally misses the point, but I can tell you from experience that organic foods do taste MUCH better than traditionally grown foods.  I don’t know why this would be, perhaps it’s several factors combined, but it’s true.

I’ll be totally honest. I don’t buy all of my food organic, but I do buy the foods that cannot be peeled before eaten and therefore have a higher toxicity organic. If it can be peeled or has a lot of protective layers around it, I figure it is usually safer than say a strawberry or an apple that is grown traditionally and had pesticides repeatedly sprayed right on them over and over again.

In the end of course, eating organic is a totally personal choice. You know how it affects your own health, and you know how eating organic makes you feel. AND you know how much better it tastes. So if you can afford it, don’t bother with concerning yourself with this ridiculous study.
