Asthma Caused by Mutated Genes?

Asthma is a fairly pervasive health issue among children, teens and adults. Often times adults will somewhat grow out of asthma, or will at least grow out of the majority of the symptoms of asthma. However, many adults, like myself, do not fully grow out of their asthma and need continued treatment, whether a natural asthma treatment or medical.

I’ve chosen to mostly treat my asthma naturally. What I do is avoid eating a ton of sugar and refined carbs, manage my stress, work out and manage my weight and that works wonder for me to avoid asthma attacks.  However, I can still get the occasional attack and that’s when I have to manage it on the spot.

Now that I’ve substantially digressed with my own asthma story :) let’s get on to the real news story. News has come out that asthma is likely caused by two mutated genes that have been identified.

Researchers found to different “regions” of DNA that are always different in those that suffer asthma, leading them to hypothesize that these genes were responsible in some way for the constriction of the bronchial tubes that asthma sufferers experience.

The interesting part is that the gene differences between people who have asthma and do not have asthma is also linked to rheumatoid arthritis (boy I guess I’m trouble when I get older :) .  For this reason, a drug that treats rheumatoid arthritis is also thought to be helpful for people with asthma.

If you think about it, they are both somewhat related to inflammation, so it makes sense that a drug that helps one may help another. Please note though, that you do have the power to naturally control your asthma through your lifestyle and eating habits.

What I’ve found helps me may not work as well for others, but I’ve found that keeping my diet free of sugar as  much as possible really helps me. I also try to avoid common allergens that I know trigger asthma.  For me, the worst allergen is mold.  It sets off an asthma attack almost instantly for me.

Stress is another one. If I feel really under the gun or traumatized, I can get an asthma attack very quickly. That’s why I manage my stress by working out and practicing relaxation techniques like breath awareness and deep breathing.  I also will go to the restroom at work and do some quick yoga moves if I just got out of a particularly stressful meeting.
