Kids with Asthma and Parents Who Smoke
Filed under Smoking CessationAug 15Well, the obvious option for parents of kids with asthma who also happen to smoke, is for them to quit smoking to provide that safest, most clean-air environment for their child. However, that’s not always a reality, and parents of children with asthma may not be able to quit smoking or maybe they just don’t want to.
Sad fact, but it’s true – that’s how addictive smoking is! Even loving parents may find themselves powerless to quit the habit for the sake of their child’s breathing. However, there are some options for parents of kids with asthma to make the air cleaner and healthier not only for their asthmatic child, but also for the rest of the non smoking members of the family.
First off, smokers should always strive to smoke outdoors. This way, they not only aren’t getting the smoke near their other family members, but they also aren’t polluting the air and the walls and every other material in the house with the chemicals in cigarettes, which can linger for many years after a smoker moves out.
Second, you can put a high quality air filtration system in the home, or at least in the rooms where you might occasionally smoke. This way, the filtration system can get much of the toxic fumes out of the air and save the air quality for the immediate vicinity.
Asthmatics do tend to be very sensitive around cigarette smoke, and some can even have an asthma attack just from being around cigarette smoke. It certainly isn’t good for their already tender lungs and constricted passageways to inhale toxic cigarette smoke which deprives the lungs of even more oxygen.
Remember the smokeless ashtray? Those were little battery operated ashtrays that would suck the smoke coming out of the cigarette down into them. They didn’t work too well, but they were the first attempt at ridding the air of the toxic fumes.
Now, we have some pretty sophisticated air filtration systems that can really do a better job of cleaning the air, so it’s well worth a look in to. Quitting smoking is obviously the best choice, but if that is not possible, there are other safer alternatives.
