The problem here, though, is that omega 6 also contains some fatty acids that can become harmful if not controlled.

They tend to create inflammation in the body, which leads to a number of other more serious problems over time. The good news is that a sufficient amount of omega 3 is just what is needed to control this harmful effect.

The ratio needs to be about 1 to 1, or, up to 4 to 1. This means anywhere between one to four times as much omega 6 as omega 3. The typical western diet, though, has a ratio of about 30 to 1 and some as high as 50 to 1.

What Sources of Omega 3 Are Available?

Omega 3 can be found in fish, meat and plants. The best forms of omega 3, EPA and DHA are found in fish, which is why it is so important to regularly eat fish. Cold water fish typically contain as much as seven times as much omega 3 as omega 6. This includes salmon, mackerel, herring, anchovies and even sardines.

A problem exists with these sources, however, and that is that the fish often contain heavy metals, such as mercury.
