I’m a sometimes-fan of the natural sleep remedy melatonin. Melatonin is actually a natural chemical that is secreted by the human body when it is dark. It helps us to sleep soundly and deeply, and provides a basis for restorative sleep for most of us.
Notice I say I’m a “sometimes” fan of the sleep aid. This is because I find that it doesn’t work on me some nights, and I also feel like it makes me wake up very early or in the middle of the night, and makes it difficult to get back to sleep.
While that may just be the brand or the dosage, or even the “time release” vs “non time released” factor, melatonin does not always agree with me. And I’m not the only one. Melatonin can be a great natural sleep aid, however, I don’t suggest anyone use it long term, and it can actually have some side effects, particularly in some people.
Melatonin has been reported to cause bad moods or even depression the next day, or on an ongoing basis if someone takes it regularly. It has also been reported to caused very wild, unsettling dreams that tend to be vivid. Some people find that melatonin has no effect at all on them.
They may wake in the middle of the night and not be able to get back to sleep, like what happens to me sometimes. Some people may experience grogginess and headache the next day after taking melatonin.
Also, check to see if this common sleep aid may have drug interactions. Even with safer sleep aids and herbal remedies, all natural supplements can have interactions with drugs, so it’s always best to check with your doctor of pharmacist if you are taking prescription meds before deciding on something like this.
