Staying Healthy While Traveling

Getting the chance to travel overseas is an exciting way to take a vacation.  It is something that many people have on their wish list of things they want to do at some point in their lifetime.  Often, couples or individuals plan for months, or even years, in advance, for a vacation abroad.

It is vital to plan ahead to make sure you stay healthy while traveling abroad so you can truly enjoy your vacation.  Know the steps you have to take to avoid illness while traveling into a totally different environment.  You want to know your itinerary, where you’ll be staying specifically and what kind of lodging you’ll be in.

You can learn what kinds of vaccinations you’ll be needing by visiting official government websites for travelers to look at to determine what they need for the country they are traveling to. One website you could look at is offered by the Center for Disease Control.  The vaccinations are given 3 different categories: routine, recommended and required.

The routine vaccinations are for diseases you don’t see in the U.S., but are common in other countries.  Then, there are the recommended vaccinations that are contingent on what area of a country you are staying in and what the season is.  The required vaccinations are mandated by intenational health regulations.

An example of a required vaccination is the one for yellow fever.  Usually, to get the vaccinations needed for travel, you’ll need to go to a travel clinic.  You’ll need to carefully plan for this timewise and budget for it.  The usual recommendation is to schedule your appointment a good 6 to 8 weeks in advance of your trip.

Another very important item to take care of is checking to see about your health care coverage outside of the U.S. Often, U.S. medical insurance companies are not accepted outside of the country.  You can check into a temporary travel policy so you’re covered in the event of illness.

Once you are traveling, know the region you are in and use common sense about what you eat and drink.  The biggest concern for most travelers is whether or not they can drink the water.  Usually, travel guide books have a section with information on this subject.

After you’re all done with your vacation abroad, you can get a post-vacation checkup at your travel clinic.  You can get checked for any health issues that are common from the foreign region you’ve just visited.
