Would You Quit Smoking After Finding Out You Are Ill?
Filed under Alternative & Herbal Health News, Smoking CessationJan 25I read the most fascinating article about people who are diagnosed with a disease that is clearly related to smoking such as COPD, lung cancer, Emphysema and other commonly related diseases. You would think people would quit the habit after finding out they ar diagnosed with one of the top causes of death, but many of them don’t. It’s not quite fifty percent of people who don’t quit but let me tell you it’s darn near that.
Roughly estimated, it’s about 40% of people who are diagnosed with one of these devasatating diseases that still do not quit smoking. This goes to show just how mentally and physically addictive nicotine and tobacco are to the human body. I even have a personal story to tell about this.
Someone close to me in my family was diagnosed with prostate cancer in his late fifties. He never did quit smoking the entire time even when he was going through chemotherapy and all the other various poison therapies he unfortunately had to be on.
Now, I get that when a person is near the end of their life and are in the terminal stages of cancer they should just “do what they want”, but there is always a chance to come back, and smoking carcinogens into your lungs is certainly a good way to hasten the disease along.
He really couldn’t quit. He was that addicted to smoking and figured he still wanted to enjoy the habit even after his cancer took a turn for the worse and he became terminal. Stopping the habit is indeed challenging. I was a smoker in college and had a hard time quitting, even though I had asthma and I never should have picked up the habit in the first place.
My conscious, intelligent mind was telling me to quit, yet my body and mind were also telling me how good it felt to hold that cigarette in my hand, inhale slowly and let the chemicals take control of my mind, giving me that great buzz that cigarettes give you.
It is indeed a huge challenge, but it’s worth it. I’ve been off cigarettes for almost a decade now and feel so much healthier. It’s a shame that so many people, even after diagnosed with life threatening disease, cannot find the willpower to quit – this is a testament to how addictive and dangerous this pastime is.

Chantix, a blockbuster drug that has been prescribed mostly as a smoking cessation drug, has recently been linked to a higher rate of suicide than smokers who try to quit without the help of a drug. The suprising part is that even nicotine patches were linked to a slightly higher risk of suicide in smokers who are trying to quit smoking.
However, the Chantix was statistically significant enough to warrant some concern. Chantix is supposed to be a drug that helps with anxiety and mood. However, it is primarily prescribed for smokers, because these are two things that suffer when one tries to quit smoking.
Of course, there are some herbal smoking cessation products as well that can work wonders for those trying to quit permanently. Chantix not only comes with a potentially higher risk of suicide, but it also must carry warnings on the label for the possibility of black outs.
The drug has actually been banned for use by pilots because of the risk of blacking out. The increased risk of depression and suicide are also listed as warnings on the label due to regulations regarding such serious potential side effects.
The company that makes Chantix is of course defending the product, saying that there are enough customers of Chantix that have had great success in quitting smoking with the drug to make up for the few that may have adverse side effects. When taking a drug like this with potential side effects or risks, it is important to use your judgement and aks yourself if the risk is worth the reward.
If you think quitting smoking is something you must do for your health, you can take a drug like this or you can also try an herbal or natural method for quitting as well. Either one is really geared toward controlling mood, appetite and cravings so that your risk of gaining weight and moodiness is reduced as much as it possibly can be when you quit this hard to kick habit.

Well, the obvious option for parents of kids with asthma who also happen to smoke, is for them to quit smoking to provide that safest, most clean-air environment for their child. However, that’s not always a reality, and parents of children with asthma may not be able to quit smoking or maybe they just don’t want to.
Sad fact, but it’s true – that’s how addictive smoking is! Even loving parents may find themselves powerless to quit the habit for the sake of their child’s breathing. However, there are some options for parents of kids with asthma to make the air cleaner and healthier not only for their asthmatic child, but also for the rest of the non smoking members of the family.
First off, smokers should always strive to smoke outdoors. This way, they not only aren’t getting the smoke near their other family members, but they also aren’t polluting the air and the walls and every other material in the house with the chemicals in cigarettes, which can linger for many years after a smoker moves out.
Second, you can put a high quality air filtration system in the home, or at least in the rooms where you might occasionally smoke. This way, the filtration system can get much of the toxic fumes out of the air and save the air quality for the immediate vicinity.
Asthmatics do tend to be very sensitive around cigarette smoke, and some can even have an asthma attack just from being around cigarette smoke. It certainly isn’t good for their already tender lungs and constricted passageways to inhale toxic cigarette smoke which deprives the lungs of even more oxygen.
Remember the smokeless ashtray? Those were little battery operated ashtrays that would suck the smoke coming out of the cigarette down into them. They didn’t work too well, but they were the first attempt at ridding the air of the toxic fumes.
Now, we have some pretty sophisticated air filtration systems that can really do a better job of cleaning the air, so it’s well worth a look in to. Quitting smoking is obviously the best choice, but if that is not possible, there are other safer alternatives.

It is a well known fact that cigarette smoking dramatically increases your risks of several types of cancer. It’s easy for us all to take on the mentality that we are indestructable and the rules don’t apply to us. In fact, that is probably a big human weakness, not realizing that we are all truly more fragile than we think, and anything that happens to others can happen to us.
We tend to throw caution to the wind and think that if everything has been ok up until now, it will probably continue to be ok. Then, smokers get knocked off their horse when they are diagnosed with a cancer that may or may not be directly linked and attributed to their habit of smoking.
You see, smoking cigarettes not only affects your lungs and increases your risk of lung cancer, but it also increases risks of every other cancer out there. Smoking actually helps cancer cells thrive because it boosts the chances that more and more of your cells, regardless of which organ we are talking about here, become mutated.
Cancer is basically a cell mutation gone awry. We all have a certain amount of mutation that goes on in our body’s cells at any given time. It is when that mutation grows and thrives out of control and the cells rapidly divide over and over again, taking over the room and oxygen and resources for the healthy cells, that cancer quite literally eats us alive.
So why then, do people who have already experienced cancer, and who smoke, find it so hard still to give up the habit of smoking, even though they know they could either get cancer again, or worsen the cancer that is already killing them?
Well, it is because smoking is highly addictive, and the longer you’ve been smoking, the harder it is to quit smoking. Smoking cigarettes, and the nicotine rush that comes with it is a deadly addiction that is hard for even the most dedicated of us to over come.
But with help from things like herbal smoking cessation products, and the genuine desire and love for yourself to get better, you can kick it forever and change the story of your life. It’s all up to you.

Smoking and Prostate Cancer
Filed under Smoking CessationJul 26In news that chalks up yet another reason you should immediately quit smoking if you still indulge in the habit, there is a lot of evidence that prostate cancer, one of the most common cancers in men, is a lot more agressive in smokers vs. non smokers.
This really isn’t surprising when you consider that smoking is actually linked to several different types of cancers, and continuing to partake in the habit only worsens cancerous cell growth. What continues to amaze a lot of people, and doctors is that, a lot of people still continue to smoke after diagnosed with cancer.
It’s like giving the cancer a helping hand at taking over your body because it helps to kill healthy cells and spawn even more unhealthy, rapidly dividing cells. Cancer is basically bad, mutated cells that turn on you and rapidly divide and multiply, taking over the healthy cells and, if left unchecked or untreated, ultimately lead to death.
Cigarette smoking is a top notch carcinogen. It is one of the worst cancer causing agents out there, and the ironic part is that we choose to either do it or not do it to ourselves.
Prostate cancer is just one of the cancers that is aggravated, or even partially caused by, cigarette smoking. Men who are diagnosed with prostate cancer who are smokers are much more statistically likely to die or to have a much more agressive form of the cancer than men who are diagnosed that are non smokers.
Smoking can definitely advance the cancer faster, and it can also make it into a much more agressive form of cancer, that divides and multiplies even more rapidly than if it did not have the help of the carinogenic by-products produced by cigarette smoke with stay in the blood stream.
This is yet another reason to quit smoking if you haven’t already and you are a smoker. There are some excellent herbal smoking cessation products out there that can help you get through the most trying stages of quitting for good.
